Our Californian Buns

Information

Breed Information

The Californian rabbit is a versatile  breed valued for both meat production and as a friendly pet. Originally developed in the 1920th by George West in California. This breed was created by crossing Himalayan rabbits, Chinchillas and New Zealand whites to produce a rabbit with excellent meat quality and a calm temperament.

Breed Characteristics

  • Size:   Medium to large (8-12lbs when fully grown)
  • Body Type:   Compact, well-rounded and muscular
  • Coat:   Dense, soft and short fur
  • Color:   White body with distinctive black or dark brown (ears, nose, feet and tail)
  • Eyes:   Pinkish-red (albino trait)

Temperament

  • Generally calm, gentle and easygoing
  • Can be affectionate with proper handling
  • Social and can do great as a pet with training

Lifespan

With good care, Californian can live 5 to 10  years, making them a long term companion for both  pet owners and homesteaders alike.

Health

Californian rabbits are generally hardy and resilient, but like all rabbits they thrive with proper care and attention. Rabbits, including Californians, have delicate hearts and spines, making proper handling essential.

Care and Diet

A balanced diet, clean living environment, regulated temperature and regular health checks are key to keeping them happy and healthy. Rabbit's diet should consist mainly of high-quality hay, supplemented with pellets, fresh greens and clean water.
